"Dress to Impress" Does it Make a Difference?
There are few things in life as stressful as that moment, standing in front of your mirror, a dozen outfits strewn about your room and realizing you don't have a thing to wear. Whether it is for a first date, a job interview, or a first day at school, putting extra thought into what you wear is inevitable. But does it really make a difference? Could the clothing you wear have any effect on the outcome of the event?
Obviously no one would want to wear a cocktail dress to work out in or wear their pajamas to the first day of school (though that latter one is becoming increasingly more plausible). But does the clothing you wear really make an impression on those you come in contact with and could it aide in you making an impression for that matter.
According to Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky, social psychologist, there is a systematic influence that clothing has on the wearer's psychological processes which they have labeled "enclothed cognition". Say-what-ta-huh? Basically, the clothing that you wear can subconsciously have an effect on your thoughts and also your actions. While this study did confirm that clothing can effect the wearer it doesn't answer our question of whether or not it effects the audience.
In truth the point of wearing clothing to impress has less to do with impressing them with the clothing that you are wearing and more to do with impressing them with the you that shows up because of the clothing that you wear. If you are dressed lazy or sloppy or unkempt, your thoughts and actions will subconsciously mirror that. If you are dressed stiff and ridged and uncomfortable your actions in turn will reflect those emotions.
Whatever the occasion and whatever the goal, your clothing can influence your emotions and that can translate into your actions. Heavenly clothing believes dressing to impress has little to do with the fabric or the fashion and everything to do with the feeling. We want you to feel wonderful in your own skin. Our clothing simply enhances the beauty that you already posses.

ReplyDeleteThe effect clothing can have on our psyche is so interesting. As I look back, I can see times when the clothes I wore affected my mood and actions.
